Why We Give Chocolate on Valentines Day
At some point in your life you have probably given, or been given, chocolate on Valentines Day. Valentines Day chocolate is a great gift for anybody who is not following a restrictive diet plan, since almost everybody likes it. However, many people give the gift of chocolate on the 14th of February without knowing what makes it such a Valentines Day favorite.
How It Started
Although the roots of Valentines Day are the Valentines saints that lived nearly two millennia ago, it was not until the seventeenth century that Valentines Day captured the imagination of the public. In fact it did not even resemble the celebration we enjoy today until the middle of the nineteenth century. It started when our emotionally repressed ancestors began to exchange small tokens of love as a way of expressing the sentiments they were unable to admit to each other out loud.
The advance of capitalism and consumerism has caused Valentines Day to become a more marketable celebration over the years. The tradition of a man giving his sweetheart Valentines Day a red heart shaped box with chocolate inside did not begin until the latter half of the twentieth century. It was during this period that expensive jewelry began to be popular as the diamond industry latched on to the idea of promoting Valentines Day gifts to make money.
Chocolate Is Sexy
Valentines Day chocolate has always been a romantic gift. The Aztecs believed that chocolate was an aphrodisiac. Now we know that chocolate is in fact a psychoactive food and eating it releases mood enhancing endorphins in the brain. Valentines Day Chocolate is undoubtedly a sexy and romantic gift because it is associated with sin, pleasure and indulgence. Furthermore, almost all women love the taste of chocolate so much that they crave for it if they go without for any duration of time. However, the downside of chocolate is what it can do to your figure, so you should make sure not to go overboard with a huge box.
Splash Out On The Gourmet Variety
If you really want to impress the one you love on Valentines Day, you should be prepared to spend extra money on some gourmet Valentines Day chocolate. Most people would rather have quality over quantity when it comes to Valentines Day chocolate. If your partner is an aficionado, perhaps you should take the time to shop around for the very best luxury chocolate this Valentines Day. Manufacturers such as Teuscher, Knipschildt, Godiva, Noka and Richart sell quality gourmet Valentines Day chocolate that is worth the extra money.
